  1. Mix the soda with the milk.
  2. Mix the cream of tartar with the flour (sufficient to make a stiff batter).
  3. Beat the egg.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients, and beat until light.
  5. Make into small balls.
  6. Fry in lard.
  7. When cold, dip in the beaten white of an egg and roll in powdered sugar.
