  1. Wash the rabbit in a little water with a pinch of salt, then cut it up.
  2. Put the rabbit into a stone saucepan with one quart to three pints cold water, salt and pepper to taste, one piece of loaf sugar, one onion whole (or three or four spring onions), one carrot, about half a pound of gravy beef, and the remains of any cold game.
  3. Boil gently for three hours.
  4. Strain the soup and place the liquid back into the saucepan.
  5. Bring the liquid to a boil.
  6. Thicken with flour and butter mixed as for chicken soup.
  7. Bring to a boil while stirring.
  8. Strain the soup again.
  9. Serve.
  10. If the soup is not dark enough, add a teaspoonful of bovril.

Boil gently for three hours, strain, and place in the saucepan again, bring to a boil, thicken with flour and butter mixed as for chicken soup, bring to a boil while stirring. Strain and serve.
