  1. Boil the gruel as above, with six spoonfuls of oatmeal, and strain it.
  2. Then add a quart of good ale, stir better.
  3. Boil it, then sweeten it to your palate, and add half a pint of white wine.
  4. When you don't put in white wine, let it be half ale.

To make Brown Caudle. BOIL the gruel as above, with ſix ſpoonfuls of oatmeal, and ſtrain it; then add a quart of good ale, ſtir better; boil it, then ſweeten it to your palate, and add half a pint of white wine. When you don't put in white wine, let it be half ale.
