  1. Put a quarter of a pound of pearl barley into two quarts of water.
  2. Let it boil.
  3. Skim it very clean.
  4. Boil half away, and strain it off.
  5. Sweeten to your palate, but not too sweet.
  6. Put in two spoonfuls of white wine.
  7. Drink it luke-warm.
