  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and melted butter.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  6. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove fritters from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with maple syrup, if desired.
