  1. Dissolve a teaspoonful of carbonate of soda in a tablespoonful of boiling water.
  2. Stir the dissolved soda and water into a full gill of molasses.
  3. Add to this half a pint thick sour cream, about 6oz. brown sugar, and rather less than 1lb. of flour.
  4. Beat it all well together.
  5. Add a tablespoonful each of allspice and powdered cinnamon, and 1lb. of stoned, minced, and floured raisins.
  6. Bake one hour in a moderate oven.
