  1. Put two gallons of very good brandy and a peck of poppies in a wide-mouth'd glass, and let them stand forty-eight hours.
  2. Strain the poppies out.
  3. Stone a pound of raisins of the sun.
  4. Bruise the stoned raisins, an ounce of coriander seed, an ounce of sweet fennel seed, and an ounce of caraway seed all together.
  5. Put the bruised mixture into the brandy.
  6. Add a pound of good powder sugar.
  7. Let it stand for four or eight weeks, shaking it every day.
  8. Strain it off.
  9. Bottle it up for use.

To make Cordial Poppy Water. Put two gallons of very good brandy, and a peck of poppies in a wide-mouth'd glass, and let them stand forty-eight hours, and strain the poppies out; take a pound of raisins of the sun, stone them, and an ounce of coriander seed, and an ounce of sweet fennel seed, and an ounce of caraway seed, bruise them all together, and put them into brandy, with a pound of good powder sugar, and let them stand four or eight weeks, shake it every day; and then strain it off, and bottle it up for use.
