  1. Make coffee as strong and clear as possible.
  2. Sweeten the coffee in the cup with white sugar until it is almost like syrup.
  3. Gently pour the brandy on top of the coffee over a spoon.
  4. Set fire to the brandy with a lighted piece of paper.
  5. When the spirit is partially consumed, blow out the flame.
  6. Drink the gloria while it is quite hot.

BURNT COFFEE, OR COFFEE À LA MILITAIRE. (In France vulgarly called Gloria.) Make some coffee as strong and as clear as possible, sweeten it in the cup with white sugar almost to syrup, then pour the brandy on the top gently over a spoon, set fire to it with a lighted paper, and when the spirit is in part consumed, blow out the flame, and drink the gloria quite hot.
