Method of preparing
  1. To make a fine blue, take indigo, and steep it in the strongest acid of vitriol, until it is dissolved; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  2. To make a fine green, take verdigris, and grind it with a little vinegar; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  3. To make a fine yellow, take saffron, and steep it in a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  4. To make a fine red, take cochineal, and grind it with a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  5. To make a fine purple, take the juice of red cabbage, and steep it in a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  6. To make a fine orange, take the juice of carrots, and steep it in a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  7. To make a fine brown, take burnt sugar, and steep it in a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
  8. To make a fine black, take lampblack, and steep it in a little water; then add a small quantity of gum arabic, and mix it well with a brush; then add a little water, and grind it again; then strain it through a piece of fine linen, and keep it in a bottle for use.
